LSU Austin Alumni Association

Texas Tiger Reception

Every year, The Austin LSU Alumni Association, along with the Dallas, Ft Worth, Greater Houston, North Houston chapters, and starting in 2011 the San Antonio chapter, sponsors a Texas Tiger Reception at LSU for students from Texas that are participating in the Spring Invitational. Linda Young from Dallas organizes this each year.

There is a minimal cost involved (about $45 per chapter in 2012), and per Bonnie Alford, it is a great way "to demonstrate that LSU’s community is one in which students are our number one priority and that we want them here." This is always a great event with a great turnout that seems to get bigger every year. And if you are ever in Baton Rouge during Spring Testing, you are more than welcome to attend this event.

Here is the 2012 event recap:

We had another well-attended reception (nearly 125 students, parents, LSU officials and Ambassadors). The Chancellor (as always!) came by to visit with the parents and students. We also had several other Admissions officials there, and this is always a good thing for parents and kids to see that the Administration cares. Stats show that 95% of the kids who attend Spring Invitational enroll in LSU in the fall, so we're hoping to see this whole group.

Here is the 2011 event recap:

We had another GREAT student/parent Texas Tiger reception at Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge this year. Approximately 120 students, parents and LSU officials stopped by the Magnolia Room in the Union to visit and all left wearing “Texas Tiger” buttons. Chancellor Mike Martin has been great about supporting our Texas recruiting efforts, and he came by once again to greet the students and parents. He was introduced by Dr. Kurt Keppler, Vice Chancellor for Student Life & Enrollment Services, and joined by several other members of the LSU staff including LSU Ambassadors.

As always, Texas has the largest number of out of state students who attend Spring Invitational, and statistics in the past have shown that 90% of those who attend will enroll at LSU in the fall. We’ll see how this year goes. We welcomed the students on behalf of all 6 Texas chapters and told them to check out your websites for upcoming activities.

We all know this year is going to be a little tougher in recruiting because of losing some of our out of state scholarships, but this event and the summer send-off parties our chapters host are ways we connect with the kids and parents to let them know LSU has great academic opportunities.

You’ll notice in the picture, Dr. Keppler (2nd from left) is proudly wearing his Texas Tiger button. Others pictured, left to right are Ron Young, Dr. Keppler, one of the LSU Ambassadors from Houston, Linda Young, Kristy Boggs, an Admissions Counselor who is from Texas, Mandy Hoffman, Financial Aid & Scholarship, and Dr. Kathleen White, Dean of Students.

Here is the 2010 event recap:

WOW!! The Texas Tiger Reception keeps getting better every year! We met this year in the French House (because of Union construction), and I was a little nervous that parents and kids wouldn't trek across the street. Boy, was I wrong! We opened the front door of the French House, and as the parents and kids saw the Texas and LSU flags up on the wall, they began to stream in -- between 175-200 of them to be exact!!

Chancellor Martin has been great about supporting our TX recruiting efforts, and he came by once again to greet the students and parents. We had 10 or 12 other university officials who also came by. There were 141 kids from TX who registered for Spring Invitational, and statistics in the past have shown 90% of those will enroll at LSU in the fall. We'll see how this year goes.

Application numbers are "out the roof" all over the state. Thanks again to your chapters for offering to split the costs. This is just one more way we connect with the kids and parents to let them know LSU has great academic opportunities.

Here is the 2009 event recap:

We had another PHENOMENAL event -- 120 Texas students registered for Spring Invitational this year (another record!!). We had nearly 150 students, parents, LSU officials and LSU Ambassadors who attended. Our new chancellor, Dr. Michael Martin, came by and addressed the group and then spent the rest of the time walking around visiting with parents and kids. (It's always nice to have support from the Top when we have these events.)

Here is the 2008 event recap:

We had another PHENOMENAL event!! We had 97 Texas students who registered for Spring Testing this year (another record!), and most of them showed up at the reception. EVERY chair in the Atchafalaya room was filled -- with students, parents, LSU officials (including Interim Chancellor Jenkins) and LSU Ambassadors, we had between 135-140 people there. Statistics in the past show that usually 90% of those attending Spring Testing will be attending LSU in the fall.
